04/11: Rivera Earns First Save of Season as Yankees Beat O's in 12 Innings

Posted by: David
It looked like Baltimore would crush the Yankees early as Freddy Garcia surrendered four runs in less than five innings and also threw five wild pitches. Jeter started the game off with a home run and Swisher followed with a double but then the Yankee offense sputtered for the rest of the game.

Chen the young Taiwanese pitcher for the Orioles was making his major league debut and had the Yankees off balance until the 6th. The Yankees tied the game with some help from a huge error from Mark Reynolds and a clutch RBI single from Brett Gardner.

The Yankees had a chance to tie the game in the next inning. Swisher was hit by a pitch and Cano followed with a double down the left field line. Thomson sent Cano and he was thrown out at the plate. With no outs, it certainly was a questionable call.

The Yankee bullpen took over the rest of the game. David Phelps, Boone Logan, David Robertson, Cory Wade, Clay Rapada and Mariano Rivera threw 7 and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Raul Ibanez had the key hit off of Pedro Strop. Buck Showalter elected to walk Curtis Granderson and pitch to Ibanez with two outs and runners on first and third in the top of the 12th inning. Ibanez delivered an RBI double which bounced into the stands in right to score the go ahead run.

Rivera entered and faced Endy Chavez to start off the inning. Chavez battled until the 9th pitch when he was caught looking for the first out. J.J. Hardy popped up to Cano and it was left up to Nick Markakis. He was 6 for 17 off of Rivera entering the AB. Rivera caught him looking to end the game and earn his 1st save of the season and 604th of his career.

He is 0-1 on the season with 1 save in 2 save opportunities and his 2012 season ERA now stands at 7.72.
