Mariano Rivera made his first appearance of the season on Sunday afternoon pitching the ninth inning vs. the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Yankees won the game 10-1 and it was a non-save situation for Mo. Since he has not been in a game since last Saturday he needed work.
He faced Tim Salmon first and after getting behind 3-1 he came back to get Salmon to pop up to first. He then faced Darin Erstad who was 5 for 11 lifetime vs. Rivera prior to this at bat. Erstad grounded a ball down the first base line which Andy Phillips was able to grab. His momentum sent him into foul territory. He threw to Rivera covering and the throw was high but Mo made a great catch and was able to step on the bag and avoid Erstad running down the line for the second out. Next up was Casey Kotchman who got a hit off Mo in his firt major league at bat. Kotchman squibbed a ball down the third base line which got past A-Rod for a hit. Jeff Mathis then flew to Bernie Williams in right field to end the game.
