10/01: Mo On Hill as Yankees Win AL East
Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera worked a scoreless ninth as the Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park 8-4. The Yankees win coupled with a loss by the Cleveland Indians clinched the American League Eastern Division title for the Yankees for the 2005 season.
Rivera started the inning by facing Jason Varitek who hit a bloop that Robinson Cano misplayed for a single. Trot Nixon then lined out to right for the first out. Tony Graffanino hit a pop to A-Rod which he juggled but held on for the second out. Johnny Damon then hit a high bouncer back to Mo which he caught and threw to first to end the game. Rivera is now 7-4 on the season with 43 saves for the season. He has 379 saves for his career. His 2005 season ERA now stands at 1.38. The Yankees jumped on Tim Wakefield for three runs in the first including a two run homer by Sheffield over the Green Monster. Randy Johnson gave two runs back in the bottom of the first when Manny Ramirez crushed a ball completely out of Fenway Park. The Yankees came right back with two to make it 5-2. The Big Unit struggled in the second but struck out Edgar Renteria with the bases loaded to end the inning without surrendering a run. The Yankees added solo homers by Matsui and A-Rod to extend the lead to 7-2. Johnson gave up a homerun to Graffanino to make it 7-3. The Yankees were able to extend the lead to 8-3 later in the game. Tom Gordon gave up a solo home run to Manny Ramirez to end the scoring at 8-4. CommentsNo comments yet.
