08/17: Rivera blows 2nd save in last three chances!

Posted by: David
It happened again. Mariano Rivera blew a save. After going approximately four months of being perfect in save opportunities, Rivera has lost a game and blown two out of the last three save opportunities.

He entered in the bottom of the ninth with the Yankees clinging to a 3-2 lead over the host Devil Rays. He struck out Jorge Cantu to start the inning. Next up was Eduardo Perez who took Randy Johnson deep earlier in the game. Mo tried to get a cutter inside but left it out over the plate and Perez crushed it just over the left field fence. It appeared that a fan with a glove reached over the fence to catch it and from the TV replay it looked like the ball would have landed on the top of the fence, however it was ruled a homerun.

Rivera was able to get out of the ninth and stayed on in the tenth only giving up a single to Toby Hall. Tampa Bay inserted a pinch runner and Mo pitched out on a 0-1 count and Flaherty nailed him stealing. Mo then retired the side in order.

The Devil Rays won in the 11th when Scott Proctor walked Jonny Gomes with the bases loaded. Rivera has converted 32 of 36 save opportunities this season and has a record of 5-3. His season ERA now stands at 1.41.
