08/27: Rivera works another inning in non-save situation

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera started throwing in the bottom of the eighth when the Yankees were leading 3-1, but due to the second two run homer from Bernie Williams when he entered the game in he top of the ninth the Yankees were leading 5-1, hence a non-save situation existed.

Rivera was not sharp. He retired the first batter on a fly to center, but then consecutive singles by Mike Sweeney and Emil Brown put runners on first and second with only one out. He then struck out Angel Berroa for the second out. He went to 3 and 2 on Teahen before getting him to ground out to first to end the game.

Rivera is 6-3 on the season and his ERA is now lowered to 1.47. He is also leading the American League Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award standings.
