05/04: Rivera gains 5th save as Yankees win in extra innings
Posted by: David
The Yankees were behind 2-0 in the seventh when they scratched for two runs on a pinch hit RBI single from Jorge Posada and an infield RBI grounder from Miguel Cairo.
In the 10th, Damon led off with a double and then Jeter walked. Giambi hit a hot smash to second but because the shift was on the ball was handled by the shortstop, and he had no one to throw to to attempt a double play. Slumping A-Rod and Matsui connected for RBI singles and the Yankees were leading 4-2. Enter Sandman! Rivera shut the door in the bottom of the tenth by pitching a perfect 1-2-3 inning. He got Sean Burroughs to ground weakly to second for the first out. Then, Tomas Perez who earlier homered to give the Rays the lead at 2-0, flew to left for the second out. Joey Gathright was the last hope. He got Mo in New York last week by singling up the middle and eventually scoring the go ahead run. He battled for ten pitches but Mo caught him looking to end the game. Rivera is 0-2 on the season with 5 saves and pitches to an ERA of 3.37 so far this season. CommentsNo comments yet.
