06/06: Rivera alone in 4th place career saves list

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera moved into fourth place on the all time career saves list with a perfect ninth inning save vs. the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night at the stadium. He preserved a 2-1 victory for Chien Ming Wang.

Rivera first faced Trot Nixon and got him on the first pitch to pop up to short left to Melky Cabrera for the first out. Jason Varitek grounded hard to first but Andy Phillips got in front of the ball and recovered nicely to beat Varitek to the bag for the second out. The last hope for the Bosox was Mike Lowell. Mo got him to ground weakly to Cano at second for the final out of the game.

In the top of the eighth with Kyle Farnsworth pitching, he retired Loretta on a fly ball to center and struck out David Ortiz for the second out. Manny Ramirez then hit a drive to deep left center field which Melky Cabrera reached his glove over the fence and robbed Manny of a game tying homer.

For Rivera it was his 12th save of the season and 391st of his illustrious career. His season ERA now stand at 2.15.
