08/21: Rivera gets win as Yankees come back against Papelbon
Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera entered in the bottom of the ninth inning with the scored tied at 5 and proved again why he is the greatest closer of all time.
He faced David Ortiz (Big Papi) to start the inning and made a good pitch on him and got him to ground to first. Giambi let the ball play him and did an ole and as a result the ball jumped over his glove and went into right field. Ortiz hustled it into a double. Manny Ramirez was walked to put runners on first and second with no one out. Kevin Youkilis attempted to bunt to sacrifice the runners but Mo jumped on the bunt and forced Ortiz at third for the first out. Mike Lowell was up next and Posada committed a passed ball and the runners moved up to second and third. Lowell was intentionally walked to load the bases. Both the infield and outfield moved in to try to prevent the winning run from scoring. Boston put up newly acquired Eric Hinske to pinch hit. Mo threw one cutter but it sailed inside. Rivera then went right after him and threw three straight fastballs by him for the second out. Doug Mirabelli then grounded back to Mo to end the inning. In the top of the tenth Jason Giambi led off with his second home run of the game to put the Yankees up 6-5. Cano got a one out double and Posada lined a shot down the right field line which stayed fair for another home run to put the Yankees up 8-5. In the bottom of the tenth Alex Cora led off and Mo got him to ground to short for the first out. Coco Crisp popped out to A-Rod at third and Mark Loretta then became the last hope for the Bosox. He singled to right and Ortiz was up again. Mo got him to fly to right to end the game. Rivera is now 5-5 on the season and his ERA now stands at 1.88.
