08/31: Rivera gets 33rd save as Yankees defeat Tigers 6-4

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera worked a scoreless ninth after Randy Johnson couldn't finish. Johnson led 6-2 enetering the ninth but surrendered a two run homer to Marcus Thames to cut the lead to 6-4 with no outs.

Rivera entered and Magglio Ordonez doubled up the gap in right. Rivera toughened and retired Guillen on a grounder to third, Casey on a grounder back to the mound and Inge on a tapper in front of the plate which Posada handled for the final out.

Rivera now has 412 saves for his career and his season ERA now stands at 1.90.

Yankees' radio announcer Suzyn Waldman reported that the results of the MRI came in and the news was good. It only showed soreness in the muscle below the elbow but no structural damage. He can still pitch and Joe Torre will try and rest him when he can.
