08/09: Rivera bounces back with save vs. Chisox
Posted by: David
After six innings Randy Johnson was pitching a no-hitter and it looked like it would be a night off for Mo, however the White Sox bats erupted and Rivera was summoned to put out the fire.
The Yankees were leading 7-0 going into the bottom of the seventh and Johnson had not given up a hit. When the inning ended the Sox had two runs and could have had more if Ron Villone had not pitched out of a bases loaded, none out jam. In the eighth, Kyle Farnsworth took over and surrendered a home run to Tadahito Iguchi to move the score to 7-3. He got two outs but also allowed two runners on. Joe Crede then took him deep for a three run homer and the Yankee lead was down to one run. Enter Sandman! Rivera entered with two outs in the eighth and faced A.J. Pierzynski. He jammed him on a cutter and got him to hit a soft liner back to the mound to end the inning. Pierzynski got jammed so bad that he fell over at the plate. In the ninth, Alex Cintron led off by grounding to second for the first out. Matt Anderson fell behind 0-2 but then Rivera went too far inside and hit Anderson with the pitch. Mo got tough and struck out Podsednik for the second out. Iguchi was the last hope and he battled Mo and hit a soft liner to right center which fell in front of Bernie and put runners on first and third. Next up for Chicago is the dangerous Jim Thome. Mo fell behind 2-0 but worked back and got him to hit a grounder to Cano at second which he flipped to Jeter for the force to end the game. The save for Rivera is his 29th of the season and 408th of his career. His season ERA now stands at 1.92. CommentsNo comments yet.
