Mariano Rivera won't pitch in this week's series against the Royals, but Joe Torre hopes to have his closer back over the weekend in Baltimore.
Rivera hasn't pitched since Thursday because of a mild muscle strain near his right elbow, but he said Monday that his arm feels better after a weekend of rest. Still, Torre plans to take a conservative approach with his most important pitcher.
"I want to stay away from him [in Kansas City]," Torre said. "We're going to try to push it as long as we can. We're progressing and it's feeling better, but the longer we can keep him down, the better it will be."
