10/05: Rivera works two scoreless innings in eventual 2-1 loss to Tribe
Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera was able to work two scoreless innings for his teammates, but they couldn't get him any runs and the Yankees eventually lost 2-1 to go down 0-2 against the Cleveland Indians in a best of five series.
He pitched the bottom of the ninth and got Kenny Lofton to fly to center. Franklin Gutierrez struck out for the second out and Casey Blake flied to center to end the inning. The 10th was more dramatic. Grady Sizemore worked a 13 pitch at bat and struck out, but Posada allowed a passed ball and his throw to get Sizemore at first was high. Cabrera sacrificed Sizemore to second for the first out. Hafner grounded to second for the second out with Sizemore moving to third. Victor Martinez was walked intentionally and Ryan Garko was hit with a 1-1 pitch to load the bases. Rivera argued to the ump that Garko did not attempt to evade the pitch but it was to no avail. However, Mo toughened and struck out Jhonny Perlata swinging to end the 10th. With the two innings pitched Rivera has now allowed only 10 earned runs in 114 and 2/3 postseason innings for an ERA of 0.78. CommentsNo comments yet.
