10/09: 10/8/07: Indians at Yankees
Posted by: Patrick
If this was Mariano's last performance as a Yankee, he went out in style. He entered in the top of the 8th with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out. He induced a ground ball from Asdrubal Cabrera to get the second out. Travis Hafner followed with a slow roller to Jeter, who charged and made an incredible play to throw Hafner out, ending the inning and saving a run.
In the 9th, Mo allowed back to back singles to lead off the inning. Kenny Lofton grounded into a fielder's choice for out number one. With runners on 1st and 3rd and the Yankees needing not to lose ground, Mo did exactly what we needed, striking out Franklin Gutierrez. He retired Casey Blake on a deep shot to left center with Johnny Damon racing back and making a great, run saving play of his own. There was some drama, but he got the job done. With the 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, his postseason ERA drops a single point to 0.77. He has now pitched in 76 postseason games, throwing 117 and 1/3 innings. Unfortunately, the Yankees were unable to get the offense going. We lost 6-4, bringing the 2007 season to an end. Mo's postseason numbers were as follows: 3 games, 4.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K.
