The Yankees took a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the 9th against the Red Sox on Friday with Scott Proctor coming in to start the inning. Julio Lugo was the first batter and Proctor struck him out for the first out. The next batter was Kevin Youkilis. On a 2-2 pitch, Proctor threw up and in, hitting and knocking down Youkilis. This led to an ejection for Proctor. After Wang had hit Mike Lowell earlier in the game, the Red Sox had hit Josh Phelps, Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano. Youkilis was the 5th batter to be hit.
Ron Villone was summoned to pitch next and to face David Ortiz. Ortiz singled, pushing Youkilis to third. And that is where Mariano entered the game. 1st and 3rd, 1 out with Manny Ramirez due up. Manny singled to left center, scoring Youkilis with Ortiz advancing to third. Next was Wily Mo Pena. Pena grounded into a fielder's choice where Ortiz scored and Manny went to second. 2 outs. 9-5, Yankees. That's where it would end as Mo got Eric Hinske to ground to second to end it. Neither of the runs scored when Mo was out there were earned, so the appearance pulls his ERA down to 5.30.
