Mariano Rivera entered in the bottom of the ninth after the Yankees regained the lead thanks to an A-Rod homer off of Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Rivera had to face the heart of the Red Sox order and got the job done. The first batter was Yankee killer David Ortiz. Ortiz battled and during the long at bat fouled off seven consecutive pitches. He almost tied the game on the last pitch with a shot to the wall in right that Abreu was able to get back on and haul in. If he had got a little lift on it, it probably would have been a tied game. Manny Ramirez was next and due to great pitch and location selection from Posada, Rivera was able to get Manny swinging. Mo then hit Youkilis with an inside pitch and the tying run was on. Mike Lowell then entered with a chance to either tie or win the game. No way!! Mo struck him out with hard stuff inside and the Yankees won the game 6-5.
Rivera now has five saves on the season and he lowered his ERA to 5.03.
