11/15: Francisco Rodriguez Tops Mo in Cy Young Voting, With Weaker Stats
Posted by: Patrick
Ben Kabak of River Ave. Blues compares the numbers of two players:
Pitcher A: 64 G, 70.2 IP, 41 H, 6 BB, 77 K, 1.40 ERA, 0.665 WHIP, .165/.190/.233 Pitcher B: 76 G, 68.1 IP, 54 H, 34 BB, 77 K, 2.24 ERA, 1.288 WHIP, .216/.314/.316 Player B received 7 second place votes and 11 third place votes in the AL Cy Young Award voting. Player A received 3 third place votes. Player A was Francisco Rodriguez, while Player B was Mariano Rivera (as reported). Mo beat him in every single stat, except that K-Rod pitched in more games. Of course, there are some other stats to consider and the big one is saves. K-Rod saved 62 games, a new record, and Mo saved 39 games. Rodriguez deserves credit for this. K-Rod's team made it to the postseason, while Mo's did not. It's a team thing, I know, but it always affects these awards. Finally, K-Rod's record was 2-3, Mo's was 6-5. I can see the case that can be made for K-Rod here, but at least, I would say that the disparity between the two relievers is too great.
