It looked like Mo would be getting his fourth save opportunity of the year. Joba Chamberlain had dug himself into a mini jam but with two on and two outs, he blew away Jose Guillen to end the inning. However, with two outs in the ninth inning and the Yankees holding a 4-1 lead, A-Rod and Posada hit back to back homers to extend the lead to 6-1 and turn the game into a non-save situation.
Since Mo hasn't worked since Sunday, Girardi got him some work and he pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the win for the Yankees. He got Billy Butler to ground to A-Rod at third, then got Alex Gordon to pop up to short. Ross Gload took a pitch out over the plate and lined in to left to keep his hitting streak vs. the Yankees in line. The Royals then pinch hit Miguel Olivo and Mo got him to fly to relatively deep left to end the game.
Rivera has pitched four innings on the season and has surrendered only two hits. His ERA still stands at 0.00.
