Despite his respect for the 27-year-old, however, Rivera remains somewhat guarded in his assessment of Papelbon.
"I'm the Godfather. (He is in) year three -- what will he become?" mused Rivera. "He will be the apprentice."
In endorsing that metaphor, Rivera suggested that it is premature to anoint Papelbon as the next great closer. It is one thing to dominate, and quite another to sustain that performance over the years.
