06/11: Rivera Saves Wang's First Win since May 2nd

Posted by: David
Chien-Ming Wang started the season with six wins in his first seven decisions but hasn't had a win since. In his last six starts prior to Tuesday night, he has gone 0-2 with four no decisions. Tonight the sinker was working like a charm as he induced four double play balls to get out of potential trouble. Wang left after 7 1/3 innings with the Yankees leading 2-1 and Jose Veras pitched the last two outs of the eighth. Melky Cabrera hit a homer in the top of the ninth to give the Yankees an insurance run with a 3-1 lead.

Rivera then entered in the bottom of the ninth for his fourth straight appearance. He struck out Daric Barton for the first out and got Buck on a broken bat pop up to Cano for the second. Carlos Gonzales then blooped a single to center before Suzuki flied out to right to end the game.

For Rivera, it's his 17th save of the season and 460th of his career. His season ERA now stands at 0.90.

Hope that Mo will feel good today after pitching for the fourth straight day for the first time this season. During those 4 days, Mariano has pitched a total of 50 pitches (30-Sat,Sund & Mon plus 20-Tuesday). The question is: Does Mo need a rest tonight? We know that Mariano is always ready to pitch every day, but the consensus (NYY fans)feel that Mo should not pitch under any circunstances tonight. Hope that the team score a lot of run tonight for Mo to have a day off.

Yeah, I would hope that Mo doesn't see any action tonight (and hopefully tomorrow, as well).
