06/18: Rivera Gets 19th Straight Save of Season vs. Padres

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera recorded his 19th consecutive save of the season vs. the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night at the stadium as the Yankees won 8-5. The Padres had closed the score to 5-4 on consecutive home runs from Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzales but the Yankees came right back with two in their next at bats. Chase Headley pulled the Padres back two within two with a homer off of Kyle Farnsworth but the Yankees again scored right back with a run in the bottom half to extend the lead to 8-5.

Rivera faced Edgar Gonzalez to start the inning and he doubled to right on a pitch that Mo left out over the plate. He then caught Brian Giles looking for the first out. Adrian Gonzalez then stepped up and Mo jammed him with a cutter which induced Gonzalez to loop a soft liner to Jeter at short. Jeter caught the ball and beat Edgar Gonzalez to the bag for a game ending double play.

For Rivera, its his 19th save of the season and 462nd of his career. His season ERA now stands at 0.82.

Mariano is pitching like the Old Mariano; with 11 pitches to end the game. The way the Yankees are playing, perphaps we will no see the No. 1 Closer, T. Hoffman, this afternoon.
