08/24: Rivera Saves 3rd Game of Series as Yankees Sweep O's

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera did it again. With Mo, Jr. watching from the dugout cheering his dad on, Mo, Sr. fashioned a four out save as the Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 8-7, to complete a three game sweep at Camden Yards.

The Yankees had an early 7-2 lead thanks to a three run homer from Damon, a key double from Nady and a four hit day from Robinson Cano. However, a two error inning and poor pitching from Darrell Rasner helped the O's climb back into the game. Jeter bobbled a routine grounder and Nady misplayed a single into a double and another run. The next inning, Brian Roberts blasted a two run homer and tied the score at seven.

However, in the seventh, hot hitting Robbie Cano delivered with a blast of his own to give the Yankees the lead at 8-7 and the bullpen of Veras, Marte and Rivera made it stand.

Rivera entered with two outs in the eighth after Marte walked the tying run to first. Mo got Jay Payton looking and the game was heading to the ninth.

The Yankees couldn't add any insurance runs and Mo had to get three outs with only a one run lead. The first two were easy as Cintron grounded to second and Ramon Hernandez grounded to third. Mo then walked Brian Roberts on four pitches and Nick Markakis was at the plate. Roberts stole second and went to third on an errant throw from Pudge. Rivera hung tough and caught Markakis looking to end the game.

For Rivera, it's his 31st save in 32 save opportunities on the season and his ERA now stands at 1.53.

Maybe, the NYY should keep the batboy, Marianito, III, for the rest of the regular season for his good luck and charming. Let's go Yankees. Mariano is looking good in good shape for the rest of the season. Arriba Mariano. Yanks are ready for Boston Red Sox.
