Mariano Rivera finally entered a tie game and got the job done. The listless Yankee offense was rescued by Jason Giambi. A-Rod had struck out three times and popped up once and was booed mercilessly by the hometown Yankee fans. Jon Lester had shut out the Yankees into the seventh inning when Cody Ransom doubled with two outs. Giambi pinch hit for Molina and delivered a tying two run homer off of Hideki Nakajima. In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded and only one out, he faced Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon got two quick strikes before Giambi delivered a run scoring, game winning single to center.
Rivera entered in the eighth with two outs and got Kevin Youkilis to fly out to center to end the inning. In the top of the ninth, Jason Bay led off and reached due to a Jeter error. Mark Kotsay flew to right for the first out and then Jed Lowrie grounded to first for out number two. On the play, Bay moved to second. Rivera then got Alex Cora to ground to A-Rod on the first pitch to end the inning.
Rivera is now 5-5 on the season and his ERA for 2008 now stands at 1.50.
