It originally looked like Mo would be in to start the ninth inning as the Yankees were clinging to a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. A-Rod got a double down the line and scored on a single from Wilson Betemit to extend the Yankee lead to 8-4 and eliminate the save situation.
In the ninth, Jose Veras was called on but, with two out, Evan Longoria hit a single up the middle to put two runners on and bring the potential tying run to the on deck circle. This created a save situation and the Sandman was summoned.
Mo faced Willy Aybar and struck him out to end the game for his 35th save of the season and 478th of his career. His season ERA now stands at 1.54.
