09/16: Mo Moves Past Smith; Only Hoffman Remains

Posted by: Patrick
On Monday night, Mariano Rivera entered the game to preserve a 4-2 lead against the White Sox. By the time it was over - and it was over in just 3 batters, thanks to 3 ground outs - he held the second spot on the career saves list, passing Lee Smith's 478 saves. The only closer who stands above him, in that category, is Trevor Hoffman, with 552.

It was save number 36 for the season and it brought his ERA down to 1.52. On passing Smith, Yankees beat writer Peter Abraham wrote::

Mariano Rivera was decidedly unimpressed that he passed Lee Smith. The closer is furious the team isn’t going to the playoffs. Furious.

Understandable. But, congratulations to Mr. Rivera on the milestone.
