09/22: Rivera Pitches Perfect Ninth Inning in Stadium Finale

Posted by: David
It wasn't a save situation, but Mo was automatic as usual. With the Yankees leading 7-3, the Sandman entered and made quick work of the Orioles in the last game played at Yankee Stadium.

Jay Payton led off with a grounder to short and was followed by pinch hitter Luke Scott, who grounded to second. Brian Roberts then grounded to first for the final out of the game and the final play of baseball at "The House That Ruth Built."

Rivera lowered his ERA to 1.45 on the 2008 season. Earlier in the day, the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0 to clinch a tie for the wild card spot. The Yankees staved off the inevitable elimination by winning at the last game to ever be played at "the stadium."
