09/28: Rivera Saves Game for Yankees as Moose Gets 20th Victory of Season
Posted by: David
Mike Mussina finally got a 20 win season. Xavier Nady's three run homer to right, off Daisuke Matsuzaka staked the Yankees and Moose to an early lead.
Mussina pitched six strong innings with the help of some key double plays and left the game with a shutout. Phil Coke was brilliant in the 7th with a perfect inning. In the eighth, Joba entered and didn't have it. He walked Bay on four pitches and Mark Kotsay followed with a double into the right field stands. Girardi didn't take any chances and pulled Chamberlain in favor of Brian Bruney. Bruney was able to get to two outs with only one run scoring and in came Damaso Marte. Marte got two strikes on Jacoby Ellsbury but then hung a slider and Ellsbury singled to left to score the second run of the inning for the Bosox. Without any other options available Girardi, summoned the Sandman to pitch to MVP candidate Dustin Pedroia with the tying run on base. Mo blew him away on three pitches to end the eighth. In the ninth, the Yankees were able to score three runs off Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon and it gave Mo a cushion. With the rain pouring down and the field very sloppy, Mo faced Ortiz to start the inning. He grounded to short but Cody Ransom couldn't handle it and Ortiz was on with an error. He was replaced by Bailey as a pinch runner. Kevin Youkilis grounded to third for the first out with the runner moving to second. Jon Van Every popped out to second and Jason Bay broke his bat and grounded to short to end the game. For Rivera, it was his 39th and final save of the season and 482nd of his career. His ERA is 1.40. CommentsNo comments yet.
