05/16: Rivera Pitches Two Innings as Yankees Beat Twins in 11th

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera pitched two strong innings but did not gain a save or a win as the Yankees couldn't deliver until the bottom of the 11th.

Mo entered in the ninth with the scored tied at four and was very effective. Joba started and left with a 3-2 lead but Phil Coke surrendered a home run to Morneau to tie the score and a run scoring double to Buscher to give the Twins the lead at 4-3.

In the ninth he faced Denard Span to start the inning and caught him looking. Brendan Harris grounded to second and then two time batting champion Joe Mauer also was caught window shopping to end the inning.

In the tenth former MVP Justin Morneau hit back to the box. Mo attempted to catch the ball but it hit off his glove and slowed it down so Jeter could not make a play. Jason Kubel got jammed and hit a blooper which fell between Jeter and Gardner in short center to put runners at first and second. Cuddyer popped to Cano at second for the first out and then Buscher flied to center with Gardner making a nice running catch for the second out. Jose Morales hit back to Mo to end the inning.

The Yankees couldn't score in the bottom of the tenth and Mo gave way to Aceves who pitched a strong eleventh inning for the win.

In the bottom of the eleventh Teixeira led off with a walk. He was four for four on the day and had all the RBI up to that point including the game tying two out single in the eighth. With Tex on first, A-Rod provided the drama with a walk off two run homer to left to win the game for the Yankees at 6-4.

Mo is still 0-1 on the season with 7 saves in 8 save opportunities. His season ERA now stands at 2.93.

Definely, it was a good game with a walk-off HR by A-Rod. The ball A-Rod hit was crushed, deepest to the left field fence; his quick and compact swing still there, perphaps he need more time to be 100%.

Well, Mariano was well rested and pitched a perfect 9th inning with 11 pitches, so He wants to come back for the 10th, because he feels good, and he works his way out of a jam. Appears, that Mo has bounced back nicely from his previous outing.

The bullpen is still a major issue, hope that Bruney will come back soon.

Oh, by the way, I believe Mariano pitched 21 strikes out of 29,yesterday afternoon. I do not know if Joe Girardi may use Mariano, if he needs him for today game. As you know, Mariano is always ready to pitch and help his team.
