05/17: No Save or Win but Rivera Pitches in Yankees Third Straight Walk Off Win

Posted by: David
The Yankee dramatics are keeping Mo from getting toward his 500th career save. After pitching two innings yesterday Mo was needed again today as the Yankees and Twins were tied at 2 after eight innings.

Rivera was facing the heart of the Minnesota order. He got to 0-2 on Mauer but then he singled to left to start the inning. Justin Morneau struck out looking and then Kubel and Cuddyer hit lazy fly balls for the last two out.

The Yankees had chances in the eighth and ninth innings to try and win the game but they couldn't get the job done. Matsui struck out with the bases loaded in the eighth after having a 3-0 count. In the ninth Brett Gardner was on second with one out after a sacrifice from Melky Cabrera. Francisco Cervelli hit a ball back up the middle which was backhanded by the Twins pitcher anf bounded back toward the catcher. Mauer fielded the ball as Gardner was running past third. He faked a throw to first and Gardner kept coming. Mauer made a great play as he turned around and dove at Gardner tagging him out before he could reach the plate.

Alfredo Aceves replaced Mo and pitched a perfect tenth. With one out in the bottom of the tenth Johnny Damon delivered a home run to the second deck in right for the third consecutive walk off win for the Yankees.

Rivera is 0-1 on the season with 7 saves in 8 save opportunities and his season ERA now stands at 2.76.

Again, The Yankees did not delivery in the 8th and 9th innings with men on bases, therefore Mo could not get the Save or the Win. Here, we come again.....Johnny Damon hit a walk-off HR. Yankees are playing a good baseball. Keep it up. Let's go Yankees.
Mariano looks pretty good, pitching an avg. of 91 MPH; you need several more games to be in good shape. Arriba Mo.
