05/19: Mo Unavailable for Save; Coke Fills In

Posted by: Patrick
The Yankees picked up their sixth win in a row on Monday and it was by a single run. Mo was unavailable, thanks to pitching three innings in the previous two games. Phil Coke filled in and was able to nail down the win. Usually, I wouldn't mention this, but I did want to pass along this conversation between Coke and Mo, shared by Sam Borden:

Coke said he was so amped up that he spent the time in between the eighth and ninth innings trying to trick himself into thinking he was just pitching some random middle inning instead of getting ready to close out the game. “I was trying to play mind-games with myself instead of thinking, ‘Where’s “Enter Sandman?”’ he said. Then, when the game was over, he went up to Mariano Rivera, who wasn’t available after working three innings the past two days, and told the closer, “Hey, you’re better at this than me.” Rivera laughed and told Coke he did a good job.

Our congratulations to Coke; it is not easy to pitch the 9th inning, specially for a Save or to Hold on the score; no doubts, that required a lot of concentration and able to do it all the time, in the regular basis, but he came thru with his first save.

We wanted to see Mo out there, but Mariano badly needed som rest, due to the fact, that he has pitched too much recently, appr. 44 pitches in the last 2 games and also, the weather in NYC was around 50's degree. We should not forget that there are 162 games, so the Yanks need Mariano to be well rested for September.
The Yankees will be in contention when Wang, Bruney, Posada, Molina & Nady come back; hope soon.
