05/08: Mo(re) Heartache for Yankees as Rivera Surrenders Back to Back Dingers
Posted by: David
Call the 2009 Yankees the Heartbreak Kids. This year's team seems to have the ability to come back from deficits but then break the hearts of its loyal fans.
Last night it happened again. Andy Pettitte surrendered home runs to Josh Bartlett, Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena to give the Rays a 4-0 lead. The Bombers fought back with the aid of Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui to tie the score at 4 but Pettitte gave up the lead again and Veras could not get the last out of an inning and the Rays added an insurance run to extend the lead to 6-4. Johnny Damon rode the white horse again with a two run bomb to tie the score at 6 and the Sandman was summoned. However, this time it was more heartbreak. Mo struck out Josh Bartlett swinging for the first out but then gave up back to back home runs for the first time in his career. Carl Crawford yanked a cutter just inside the foul pole in right and Longoria hit his second of the night when Mo made a mistake and left a pitch right down the middle. Rivera got Pena to ground out for the second out, but then was removed from the game for the first time since April of 2007. The Yankees looked defeated against Brian Shouse in the ninth with two weak grounders and a strike out to end the game. It was their fifth loss in a row and they have fallen two games under .500 for the season. Tonight A-Rod returns. Perhaps he could be our saviour! CommentsMoises Young Diaz wrote:
Appears that everybody is concerned about Mariano's age (39) and his shoulder operation, because his velocity is down to 90 MPH and it was missing from the Cutter and location. No excuses for Mariano; It is possible that his strength is not there yet; we have to wait and see it. We also, has to remember that Mo has never been great in tie- game situations, such as, last year with 6-5 in 15 appearances.
Hope that Mo will forget these kind of games and be ready for the next games. We love you Mariano, Always.

Thanks for the comments.
He didn't get the job done. But, I still feel basically the same way... it's a handful of games, we'll have to see what happens over a longer period. I'm confident he'll put this behind him. Patrick

Good point,Patrick. It was very sad to see Mo to gave up two HR's last night at the game. Mariano Rivera has such class and has been so incredible consistent for the past 10+ years of his wonderful career. This early season, Mo has a typical start, with 5 saves, but after that, Mo has looked very hittable.
Hope this is not the beginning of his ending career. We have to give him time to recover from his surgery and get some strength, maybe by July. Let's go Mo; arriba Mariano.
