08/11: Rivera Gets 33rd Save After Four Run Eighth Inning Rally

Posted by: David
It looked like deja vu all over again as Monday night's one run loss was almost repeated. The Yankees jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Scott Richmond in the first but Joba gave it back in the third. He got wild and then on a 3-1 count to Lyle Overbay he threw a cookie and Overbay responded with a bases clearing three run double to tie the score. Rookie Ruiz hit a home run off the foul pole in right to give the Jays the lead at 4-3.

Richmond hung tough and then Accardo followed with a tough seventh inning. The Yankees bullpen was also great with Afredo Aceves, Phil Coke and David Robertson combining for two scoreless innings.

In the eighth with the Yankees trailing by a run Hideki Matsui led off with a monster deep into the right field seats to tie the score. Posada followed with a disputed home run but after review the call was upheld and the Bombers had the lead at 5-4. They would add two more runs on RBI's from Melky Cabrera and Johnny Damon to extend the lead to 7-4.

In the ninth Mo got Ruiz to line softly to Cano at second for the first out. Edwin Encarnacion took a cutter that didn't cut and launched it into Monument Park to cut the lead to two runs at 7-5. Rod Barajas followed with a single to bring the potential tying run to the plate. Mo then turned out the lights. He got Inglett looking for the second out and got Marco Scutaro swinging to end the game. Scutaro had a walk off home run against Mo on April 15, 2007 to win a game for the Oakland A's.

For Rivera it is his 33rd save in 34 save opportunities and the 515th of his career. With the run he gave up his season ERA now stands at 2.02. The run was the first surrendered by Rivera since June 12th. The save was Mo's 29th consecutive of the season.
