08/15: Tex's Ninth Inning Home Run Provides Opportunity for Mo's 34th Save

Posted by: David
Ryan Rowland-Smith and Andy Pettitte battled for seven innings to a 2-2 tie. Phil Hughes walked two but got a key strike out to end the eighth. Tex led off the top of the ninth with a home run and the Yankees added an insurance run to give the Sandman a two run lead.

In the bottom of the ninth Mo was very workmanlike and pitched a perfect inning to garner his 34th save of the season and 30th consecutive. He retired Rob Johnson on a grounder to short, Josh Wilson on a grounder to third and ended the game by getting Michael Saunders to ground to second.

The Yankees remained 6 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox with the win. The Texas Rangers only needed one strike to secure a run but Boston rallied for six runs to win the game 8-4.

Rivera is 1-2 on the season with 34 saves in 35 save opportunities. His season ERA was lowered to 1.98.
