08/16: Rivera Extends Consecutive Save Streak as Yankees Roll
Posted by: David
The Yankees won their fifth straight game and third in a row over the Seattle Mariners with a 5-2 win on Saturday night in Seattle.
The Yankees scored four runs early with the benefit of a Nick Swisher two run homer and some shoddy fielding by the Mariners. Mitre and the bullpen held tough and eventually handed the game over to the Sandman. David Robertson came in during the seventh inning with two runners on and was able to strike out two batters to end the inning. Phil Coke followed him and had the strike out pitch working also. Derek Jeter hit a home run in the top of the ninth to extend the Yankees lead to 5-2 and maintain a save situation for Mo. In the ninth Josh Wilson led off and struck out swinging. Ryan Langerhans worked a rare walk from Mo and Ichiro followed with a hard single to right on an 0-1 pitch. Franklin Gutierrez was the potential tying run and struck out swinging and Jose Lopez hit the first pitch to right to end the game. The save for Rivera was his 35th of the season in 36 save opportunities and the 517th of his career. It is also his 31st consecutive save on the season which is the highest current MLB streak. His season ERA now stands at 1.94. With the win and a Red Sox loss the Yankees now have increased their lead in the AL East to 7 1/2 games. CommentsNo comments yet.
