08/02: Rivera Gets 30th Save For Seventh Straight Season

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera earned his 30th save of the 2009 season and joined three other pitchers in history for having at least 30 saves in seven consecutive seasons. Trevor Hoffman has had eight and Rob Nen and Troy Percival have acheived seven straight seasons.

CC Sabathia grinded all day. The Yankees jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but CC gave it back quickly when Jermaine Dye took a high outside pitch over the right field fence for a two run homer. Jim Thome was the next batter and also hit a home run to put the White Sox ahead at 4-3. The Yankees came right back with two runs and then added two more to extend the lead to 7-4.

Sabathia was cruising until the eighth when he was pulled after giving up a lead off double. Phil Hughes entered and got two outs with a walk in between and Mo was summoned.

Rivera faced Carlos Quentin to start the inning and he singled to right on the first pitch to score a run and pull the Chisox to within two at 7-5. Mo then toughened and struck out Getz looking to end the eighth.

The Yankees added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Melky Cabrera led off with a triple to hit for the cycle. He was the first Yankee since 1995 to accomplish this feat when Tony Fernandez did it on September 3rd of that year. Derek Jeter scored him on a clutch two out hit and run single.

In the ninth Rivera faced Jayson Nix to start the inning and got him on a grounder to second for the first out. A.J. Pierzynski pinch hit and walked on four pitches. Scott Podsednik hit into a force place for the second out and then took second on defensive indifference. Gordon Beckhan then grounded hard to first to end the game.

For Rivera it is his 512th career save and his ERA now stands at 2.01 on the season.
