08/23: Rivera Pitches Scoreless Ninth as Yankees Win Rubber Game vs. Bosox
Posted by: David
It wasn't a save situation but Joe Girardi was not going to take any chances and summoned Mo to close the door on Boston.
Mo did just that. He walked pinch hitter J.D. Drew on four pitches to start the inning and Drew then took second on defensive indifference. No sweat for the Sandman! Jason Varitek was caught looking at a backdoor cutter for the first out. Pinch hitter Casey Kotchman grounded to Texeira at first for the second out and then Jacoby Ellsbury struck out swinging on a devastating cutter to end the game. For Rivera, he is 1-2 on the season with 36 saves in 37 save opportunities and has 518 saves on his career. His 2009 season ERA now stands at 1.87. The Yankees jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Derek Jeter hit the first pitch of the game from Josh Beckett for a home run. Matsui followed later with the first of his two home runs on the night to extend the lead to 2-0. The Red Sox were able to score two runs due to some shoddy fielding from Robinson Cano who had two errors on the night. The Yankees came right back with two on an RBI hit from Mark Texeira and a RBI ground out from A-Rod. Cano hit a home run to extend the lead to 5-2 as the Yankees roughed up Josh Beckett. Cano dropped a pop up which allowed Jason Bay to score but A-Rod lined a two run home run over the Green Monster to extend the lead to 7-3. The Red Sox would scratch for another as Sabathia was done after 6 2/3 innings. Phil Hughes relieved and got Pedroia to line to right to end the seventh. Hughes continued in the eighth and gave up a single to Victor Martinez but then got Youkilis on a deep drive to center, struck out Jason Bay and ended the eighth without any runs scoring. Matsui hit his second home run of the night to extend the lead to 8-4 . The win extends the Yankees lead to 7 1/2 games over Boston and reduces the Red Sox Wild Card lead to only one game over Texas. The Yankees completed the road trip at 7-3 and after a day off on Monday return home to face the Texas Rangers starting on Tuesday night with Joba on the mound. CommentsNo comments yet.
