08/31: Rivera Records 33rd Consecutive Save as Yanks Beat O's

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera earned his 33rd consecutive save of the 2009 season on Monday night as the Yankees beat the Orioles 5-1 in the series opener.

The night belonged to Andy Pettitte who was perfect until two outs in the seventh inning when Jerry Hairston, Jr. let a hard ground ball slip through his legs for an error. The no hitter was gone right after that as Nick Markakis singled down the third base line. Pettitte retired the next batter and got though the eighth by only surrendering one run on a home run to Melvin Mora.

Brian Bruney started the ninth but could only get one out and let two runners reach base. With the game in a save situation, Girardi summoned the Sandman and he made quick work of the Orioles.

He got Nick Markakis to swing at a cutter and he looped the ball to short right with Robinson Cano making a running over the shoulder catch for the second out. Nolan Reimold was next and Mo caught him looking to end the game. Reimold had a home run earlier in the season vs. Rivera.

The save for Rivera is his 37th on the season and 519th of his career. His 2009 season ERA now stands at 1.81.

Hope that Mo will have more opportunities for the rest of the season, Sept., in order to save more than 45 Saves for the year. The team is hitting very well on the 7 and 8 innings, scoring a lot of runs, therefore Mo will no have the chance/opportunity to save games on the 9th inning. Let's go Mariano from Panama; keep it up.
