Mariano Rivera's scoreless ninth inning seemed like an after thought when A-Rod finally connected in the bottom of the 15th inning with Derek Jeter on 1st to propel the Yankees to a 2-0 win over the Boston Red Sox.

The game was touted as a pitcher's duel between Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett and certainly lived up to the billing. Beckett pitched seven scoreless innings and Burnett pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings and surrendered only one hit.

The bullpens took over. Phil Hughes got one out as he induced a fly ball to left off the bat of reigning MVP Dustin Pedroia to end the eighth.

Rivera was summoned in the ninth and struck out Victor Martinez swinging and Kevin Youkilis looking. David Ortiz singled to right on a cutter that was left out over the plate. J.D. Drew hit a hump back liner to third for the final out of the ninth.

The bullpens were great for the next six innings with each team threatening but both teams coming up with great pitching and great defense to extend the game further. J.D. Drew made a great leaping game saving catch to rob Eric Hinske. Robinson Cano was positioned perfectly all night long to rob David Ortiz of several hits.

In the 15th Jeter led off with a single but Damon popped out in a failed sacrifice bunt attempt. Teixeira struck out on a high fast ball and it was left up to A-Rod. On a 2-1 pitch Junichi Tazawa hung a slider and Alex crushed it for a game winning two run home run.

As for Rivera his season ERA now stands at 1.91.
