08/09: Rivera Earns 32nd Save as Yankees Sweep Bosox
Posted by: David
The game looked like a repeat of Friday night with each pitcher putting up goose eggs on the scoreboard. Jon Lester and Andy Pettitte were both great all night.
In the seventh Lester tired just a bit and got a pitch down to A-Rod which he hit for his 21st home run of the season and 574th of his career to surpass Harmon Killebrew for ninth place on the all time home run list. The Red Sox finally scored after 31 innings with Victor Martinez going deep off of Phil Coke with Dustin Pedroia aboard to give Boston the lead at 2-1. Fireballer Daniel Bard came in for the bottom of the eighth and got two quick outs. Bard got a pitch too low to Damon and he deposited into the bullpen to tie the score at two. On the next pitch Bard went to his curve ball and hung one to Texeiera who crushed the ball into the second deck in right to give the Yankees the lead. The Yankees kept hitting and Nick Swisher got a key two out two run single to give the Yankees insurance and extend the lead to 5-2. Enter Sandman! Mo was a little bit off and J.D. Drew hit a sharp single to right to lead off the inning. Mike Lowell hit a deep fly ball to right for the first out. Jason Varitek battled and eventually struck out on an inside cutter for the second out. David Ortiz then pinch hit and worked a walk to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the name of Jacoby Ellsbury. Mo simply overmatched him and broke his bat resulting in a weak ground out to first to end the game. With the sweep the Yankees now enjoy a 6 1/2 game lead over Boston. The save is the 32nd for Mo which leads MLB and the 514th of his career. His season ERA now stands at 1.87.
