04/18: Rivera Earns 5th Save of Season as Yankees Sweep Rangers

Posted by: David
Mariano Rivera converted his fifth consecutive save of the 2010 season and his 50th consecutive at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees are now 9-3 on the short season and completed this six game home stand with a sweep of the Texas Rangers. Derek Jeter was scratched with a head cold but Ramiro Pena filled in with solid defense and a clutch two out two run single. Mark Texeiera and Jorge Posada hit home runs and Andy Pettitte was brilliant with eight strong innings.

The Yankee defense was also outstanding with two brilliant plays from gold glover Mark Texeira. It was the tenth consecutive game without an error for the Bombers.

For Rivera, he was awesome as usual. He faced perennial All-Star and former MVP Vladimir Guerrero to start the inning and retired him on a soft line out to right field. American League home run leader Nelson Cruz was next and Mo caught him looking for the second out. Chris Davis pinch hit for Ryan Garko and he also became a victim of looking inside for the cutter and watching Mo paint the outside corner with a strike to end the game.

Rivera has five saves on the season in five save opportunities and 531 on his brilliant career. His season ERA remains at 0.00.

The Yankees now head to the West Coast with a day off tomorrow and resume play on Tuesday night in Oakland vs. the A's.
