04/07: Granderson Big Fly Off Papelbon Sets Up Mo For 2nd Save
Posted by: David
Curtis Granderson hit a home run in his first at bat as a Yankee at Fenway Park and tonight it was deja vu all over again. The Yankees and Red Sox battled all night long with great starting pitching from Andy Pettitte and John Lackey.
David Ortiz scored Dustin Pedroia early in the game and the Yankees tied it late with a clutch RBI single from Nick Swisher off of fireballer Daniel Bard. The bullpens were both tough until the tenth. Chan Ho Park pitched three solid innings and Okajima, Bard and Papelbon kept pace until the tenth. Papelbon came back out for a second inning and Curtis Granderson jumped on a high fastball and crushed it deep to right to give the Yankees the lead at 2-1. The Bombers would scratch another insurance run and that way all that Rivera needed. Rivera made quick work of Jacoby Ellsbury as Texeira made a nice unassisted play for the first out. Dustin Pedoria battled to 3-2 until he grounded to third for the second out. Victor Martinez was the last hope and Mo got him to fly to left to end the game. With the win the Yankees win the series the hard way after losing the first game. For Rivera it is second save of the season in as many save opportunities and his ERA of course remains at 0.00. The Yankees now fly to Tampa for a weekend series against the tough Rays starting on Friday night.
