Mariano Rivera had not pitched since April 30th and it looked like he would have a save opportunity. With the Yankees leading 3-0 the situation was set up perfectly. However, the Bombers erupted for a huge ninth inning and extended the lead to 8-0.
Since Mo was warmed up, Girardi had him come in and as usual he pitched a perfect inning. Miguel Cabrera flew out, Brennan Boesch grounded out and Avila struck out looking to end the game.
Phil Hughes was brilliant again for seven innings. Joba Chamberlain pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Mo finished up the blowout. The Yankees had lost three consecutive games prior to the win tonight.
For Rivera, his ERA still remains perfect at 0.00.
