CC Sabathia cruised through seven innings and left with a 5-1 lead. However, Joba Chamberlain surrendered four runs in the eighth to tie the score and Rivera entered in the ninth.
Rivera retired pinch hitter Mike Lowell on a grounder to A-Rod to start the inning. Darnell McDonald singled up the middle and then Marco Scutaro popped up to short right field. Cano ran away from the ball when it looked like Thames was going to catch it but he dropped it and both runners were safe at first and second. Dustin Pedroia grounded weakly to first for the second out, but both runners moved up on the play. Jeremy Hermida battled and eventually lined a double over the head of Randy Winn to score two runs and give the Red Sox the lead at 7-5. Kevin Youkilis flied out to center to end the inning.
The Yankees battled back against Jonathan Papelbon but were only able to score one run and lost game 7-6. Cano doubled in A-Rod from second and was advanced to third with one out, but could not score when Juan Miranda grounded back to the box and Randy Winn struck out swinging to end the game.
Rivera is now 0-1 on the season, but his ERA is lowered to 1.46 with both runs he surrendered being unearned.
