05/22: Rivera Struggles But Saves Opener of Subway Series vs. Mets

Mo still doesn't quite have his command down yet, but it is coming. However, on Friday night at Citi Field he was able to hold on and help the Yankees beat the Mets 2-1 in the opener of interleague play at Citi Field.

Javier Vazquez was a pleasant surprise for Joe Girardi and the Yankees as he completed six shoutout innings and surrendered only one hit. However, during his second successful sacrifice bunt he bruised a finger and was taken out of the game.

David Robertson got two outs and then Joba Chamberlain struggled some but mad it through one and one third and held a 2=0 lead for the Yankees and Mo.

The lead came on a two run double from recent call up Kevin Russo.

Rivera entered in the ninth and faced Jose Reyes to start the inning. Reyes flew out to Winn in left field and that was followed quickly by Joey Cora bouncing back to Mo for the second out. Jason Bay was next and he doubled to deep left and then rookie phenom Ike Davis doubled to right center to score Bay. David Wright was the potential winning run but Mo got tough and got him to ground to second to end the game.

For Rivera it is his eighth save in nine save opportunities and the 534th of his career. His record is 0-1 and his ERA is now at 2.03.
