05/26: Jeter Home Run and Stellar Defense Set Up Mo For 9th Save
Posted by: David
A.J. Burnett and Scott Baker pitched stellar on Tuesday night in Minnesota but the rains came after the fifth and the game was suspended until 4 PM this afternoon.
Derek Jeter hit a home run in the sixth for the only run of the game and with runners on second and third he went into the hole deep and used his patented jump throw to retire Delmon Young and prevent the Twins from either tying or more likely taking the lead in the game. David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain got through the seventh and eighth and the torch was handed to Mo for the ninth. Rivera still isn't right with his control and he almost blew another save. However, rookie Kevin Russo went to the wall in left to retire J.J. Hardy for the first out of the game. Jim Thome pinch hit for Brendan Harris and he was walked again by Mariano. In a Sunday afternoon game in the Bronx on May 16th, Mo also walked Thome to force in a run prior to Kubel's grand slam. With one out Denard Span was up and Mo got him to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. For Rivera it is his 9th save of the season and 535th of his career. His season ERA now stands at 1.88.
