06/01: Rivera Collects 11th Save Of Season in Series Opener vs. Orioles

Posted by: David
The game was a real pitchers duel between Brian Matusz and Javier Vazquez. Each pitcher gave up only one earned run. The Yankee run scored on a home run from Curtis Granderson and the O's tied the score on a long ball from Corey Paterson.

Both pitchers also pitched out of huge jams. Matusz was faced with second and third with no outs. He got two pop ups and a strike out to end the inning. Vazquez had the bases loaded and one out and was able to strike out Adam Jones and then get a force play to end the inning.

In the eighth, Matusz was relieved by David Hernandez and he induced A-Rod to ground to third but the throw from Miguel Tejada was low and Wigginton could not handle it and it skipped by him allowing two runs to score.

Joba Chamberlain bounced back from an awful outing with a perfect eighth inning and then handed the torch to Rivera.

Rivera got Nick Markakis on a huge jam shot back to the mound for the first out. Ty Wigginton was also jammed and grounded weakly to Miranda at first for the second out. Luke Scott lofted a liner over short for a single but then Matt Wieters grounded to short and Jeter flipped to Cano for the force to end the game with the Yankees winning 3-1.

For Rivera it was his 11th save of the season in 12 save opportunities and the 537th of his career. His ERA for the 2010 season now stands at 1.56.
