06/06: Yankees Avoid Sweep From Blue Jays With Four Run Rally in Eighth

Posted by: David
It looked like the new Toronto Blue Jays would sweep the Yankees with great starting pitching as Brandon Morrow was dealing all day alongside a great effort from Javier Vazquez for the Bombers.

Vazquez made only one mistake. He walked Adam Lind and when Vernon Wells missed a hanging slider on a previous pitch, he did not miss the next hanger and deposited into the left field seats for his 15th home run of the season.

Francisco Cervelli led off the eighth and was hit in the shoulder with a 1-2 pitch. Morrow was relived by Kelly Downs and he proceeded to hit Brett Gardner as well.

With runners on 1st and second and no outs, Derek Jeter doubled just inside the first base line to make the score 2-1 and put runners on second and third. Nick Swisher struck out on a check swing which got Joe Girardi ejected.

Struggling Mark Texeira was walked intentionally to load the bases for A-Rod. This time A-Rod eventually struck out but a wild pitch on the pitch before scored Gardner to tie the game at two. With two outs and two on, Robinson Cano came to the plate and delivered a clutch two out single to left to score two and put the Yankees ahead at 4-2.

Joba gave a run right back when ex-Yankee Jose Molina doubled deep to right center just out of the reach of Curtis Granderson. Fred Lewis followed with a single up the middle and the Blue Jays were within a run at 4-3. Chamberlain got tough and induced a double play grounder off the bat of Aaron Hill and then Damaso Marte struck out Adam Lind to end the inning.

The Yankees could not add any insurance and Mo had to face the heart of the order to preserve a Yankee win. He needed only five pitches. On the second pitch to Vernon Wells, he got a hot grounder to third. Ramiro Pena made a nice short hop catch and threw out Wells for the first out. Jose Bautista lined out to Cano for the second out and Alex Gonzalez grounded to Pena at third to end the game.

Rivera has 13 saves on the 2010 season and his ERA now stands at 1.40.
