08/18: Rivera Finishes Yankee Win Again in Non-Save Situation
Posted by: David
On Wednesday night in the Bronx, Mariano Rivera was called upon even though the game was not in a save situation. He entered with the Yankees ahead 9-5 and closed the door as usual.
Rivera struck out Austin Jackson for the first out and then sawed the bat off of Ramon Santiago and induced a weak ground ball to Cano. Ryan Raburn was the last hope and he flied to center to end the game. It was a night for the long ball and bean ball. The Yankees scored three in the bottom of the first with back to back home runs from Teixeira and Cano. The Tigers would bounce back with Miguel Cabrera hitting two solo home runs to pull the Tigers to within a run. Curtis Granderson struck back for the Yankees and the Bombers would add additional runs later with two scoring on a double from Austin Kearns. Yankee starter Dustin Moseley lasted only five innings and left with a 6-4 lead. He was relieved by Chamberlain, Logan, Wood, Gaudin, Robertson and then Rivera. In the 7th, Kerry Wood struck out the last two batters of the inning with the bases loaded. Brett Gardner was hit with a pitch in the first inning and both benches were warned. Later in the game, Chad Gaudin drilled Miguel Cabrera, but no ejections came. Jim Leyland fumed and eventually got tossed but no players were ejected. Derek Jeter got a pitch behind him in a later AB. Rivera lowered his 2010 season ERA to 1.02. CommentsNo comments yet.
