09/28: Rivera Gets Final Two Outs for CC as Yankees Clinch Postseason Berth

Posted by: David
CC Sabathia was brilliant into the ninth inning on Tuesday night in Toronto. He had only given up two hits and one run as the inning started. Travis Snider who homered earlier led off with a single and that was followed by a walk to Yunel Escobar. Sabathia got A.L. home run leader Jose Bautista to fly out to left for the fist out of the ninth. Girardi decided he had had enough and Rivera was summoned.

Mo faced Vernon Wells and he hit the ball hard but it was right at Brett Gardner in left and there was one out to go. Lyle Overbay hit the ball off the end of the bat and A-Rod was able to grab it behind third and bounced a throw to Texeira which just beat Overbay for the final out of the game and to clinch a postseason berth for the 2010 Yankees.

The star of the game was CC Sabathia who was brilliant with a low pitch count. He went 8 1/3 innings and surrendered only three hits and one run and was credited with his 21st win of the season against only seven losses.

The Yankees scored all six of their runs tonight on something other than a base hit. A-Rod, Teixeira and Cano hit sacrifice flies. A-Rod walked with the bases loaded and the other two runs scored on infield outs.

The Yankees celebrated with champagne in the clubhouse and still remain one-half game behind Tampa for the A.L. East lead. David Price won his 19th with the Rays beating the Orioles 5-0.

With the 2/3 of an inning pitched, Rivera's 2010 season ERA now stands at 1.83.
