05/16: Rivera Pitches Scoreless Ninth in Loss to Red Sox
Posted by: Patrick
The Red Sox completed their three game sweep of the Yankees on Sunday night. According to ESPN, it was the third time in 25 years that the Red Sox have swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
Down 7-5, Joe Girardi opted to have Mo start the ninth to keep it close. After striking out Alex Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis singled. David Ortiz was next up, fouling out to Teixeira for the second out. J.D. Drew walked before Jed Lowrie grounded out to end the inning. The Yankees could not get anything going in the ninth. Curtis Granderson hit home run number 13, scoring and driving in two runs. Teixeira was the only Yankee with more than a hit, going 2 for 5 with an RBI. Andruw Jones also homered. Jorge Posada did not start, following the feeding frenzy around his decision not to play on Saturday. Girardi did slot him in as a pinch hitter to start the eighth and he drew a walk. However, Russell Martin, Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter were retired in order afterward. Mo's save count remains at 13, just 28 away from 600. He lowered his ERA by 8 points to 1.45. The Yankees begin a new series Monday night against the Rays in Tampa. CommentsNo comments yet.
