04/19: Rivera Saves Hughes First Win as Granderson Goes Deep Thrice
Posted by: David
It was vintage Mo in the ninth. He only needed seven pitches to retire pesky Jamey Carroll, three time batting champion Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham who has hit safely in every game so far this season.
The game was really an audition for Phil Hughes to stay in the rotation. He did not start off well as Eduardo Nunez made a throwing error allowing Joe Mauer to reach and eventually led to a four run inning. The Yankees came back with Granderson hitting the first of three home runs and Mark Teixeira jacking a two run shot to pull the Yankees within a run at 4-3. Granderson's second and third home runs of the evening game the Yankees a three run lead at 7-6. Phil Hughes gave back two runs on a home run to Ryan Doumit and that would end the scoring on the night. Hughes would leave after 5 1/3 and the bullpen was stellar again. Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera closed the door on the Twins allowing the Yankees to gain a split of the four game series. In the ninth Rivera got Jamey Carroll to bounce back to the mound for the first out. He jammed Joe Mauer on a great cutter which shattered the bat and the ball dribbled to Nunez at second for the second out. Josh Willingham was the last hope and Mo popped him up to Russell Martin to end the game. Rivera is 0-1 on the season with 3 saves in 4 save opportunities and his season ERA now stands at 4.15.
